A Look at Psalm 22

The method by which God causes a prophet to speak is quite amazing. In his heart he sees an event. He knows it shall happen, and he is moved under the most profound feeling to declare it, knowing fully well the Spirit of the LORD is moving him and that he is a prophet. David sang his psalms fully understanding God was speaking through him. In Psalm 22 he speaks from 2 different perspectives: from the point of view of being the victim of something terrible, believing that God has forsaken him. Then in verse 22 he speaks from the perspective of a witness of the after effects of this event. David had a repeating and clear theme of separating between LORD and Lord. Psalm 22 is no different. After verse 22 it becomes clear that he is speaking in retrospect as a witness to a great and future event. More than anything this makes it clear he speaks of the crucifixion. Let us divide it up as it was written, to reveal the pattern.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

   But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head saying, ‘He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.’ But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts. I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.

   Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They have opened their mouths against me, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my throat; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For many dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have beset me round: they pierced my hands and my feet. They counted all my bones, and they looked and stared upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my raiment.

   But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword; my precious life from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

   Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the LORD’s: and he is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

אלי אלי למה עזבתני רחוק מישועתי דברי שוגתי: אלהי אקרא יומם ולא תענה ולילה ולא-דמיה לי: ואתה קדוש יושב תהלות ישראל: בך בטחו אבותינו בטחו ותפלטמו אליך זעקו ונמלטו בך בטחו ולא-בושו: ואנכי תולעת ולא-איש חרפת אדם ובזוי –עם: כל-ראי ילעגו לי יפטירו בשפה יניעו ראש: גל אל-יהוה יפלטהו יצילהו כי חפץ בו: כי-אתה גהי מבטן מכטיחי על-שדי אמי עליך השלכתי מרחם מבטן אמי אלי אתה: אַל-תרחק ממני כי-צרה קרובה כי אין עוזר: סבבוני פרים רבים אבירי בשן כתרוני: פצו עלי פיהם אריה טרף ושאג: כמים נשפכתי והתפרדו כל-עצמותי היה לבי כדונג  נמם בתוך מעי: יבש כחרש כחי ולשוני מדבק מלקוחי ולעפר-מות תשפתני: כי-סבבוני כלבים עדת מרעים הקיפוני דקרו ידי ורגלי: אספר כל-עצמותי המה יביטו יראו-בי: יחלקו בגדי  להם ועל-לבושי יפילו גורל: ואתה יהוה אַל-תרחק אילותי לעזרתי חושה: הצילה מחרב נפשי מיד-כלב יחידתי: הושיעני מפי אריה ומקרני רמים עניתני: אספרה :שמך לאחי בתוך קהל אהללך

 

 יראי יהוה הללוהו כל-זרע יעקב כבדוהו וגורו ממנו כל-זרע ישראל: כי לא-בזה ולא שקץ ענות עני ולא-הסתיר פניו ממנו ובשועו אליו שמע: מאתך תהלתי בקהל רב נדרי אשלם נגד יראיו: יאכלו ענוים וישבעו יהללו יהוה דרשיו יהי לבבכם לעד: יזכרו וישבו אל-יהוה כל-אפסי-ארץ וישתחוו לפניך כל-משפחות גוים: כי ליהוה המלוכה ומשל בגוים: אכלו וישתחוו כל-דשני-ארץ לפניו יכרעו כל-יורדי עפר ונפשו לא חיה: זרע יעבדנו יספר לאדני לדור: יבאו :ויגידו צדקתו לעם נולד כי עשה

 

Despite English translations interpreting lamah as “Why” it is really “to what”— in other words to “what purpose, use, or ultimate reason.”  In Hebrew the parts of Psalm 22 are made ever so clear. The first sentence is the question. The body of the Psalm underscores the reason for the question. The last part (in blue) is the answer and conclusion. Lamah does not imply surprise. It asks plainly to what purpose am I forsaken. The answer is made clear. The Cross is in view, and its aftermath.
