The restoration of a Jewish State in Palestine named Israel was not a sudden, sweeping event. It was the culmination of a slow and subtle process. It started with a ragtaggle Aliyah in 1881, then an organized Zionist movement in 1897. This was coupled with the reintroduction of Hebrew as the spoken language of Jews in Palestine with the Second Aliyah. There was the Balfour Declaration of 1917 to Lord Rothchild indicating active support from an influential nation like Britain. There were events that were crucial, like World <IMG ID="Picture218" HEIGHT=156 WIDTH=218 SRC="../assets/images/state-of-israel-is-born-762227.jpg" VSPACE=0 HSPACE=0 ALIGN="LEFT" BORDER=0 ALT="state-of-israel-is-born-762227" TITLE="state-of-israel-is-born-762227">War I. Britain took Palestine from the Sultan, and the League of Nations gave Palestine to Britain to govern as a Mandate. Had this not happened, the modern State of Israel never would have come about. No Muslim nation ever would have let Jews get a foothold back in Palestine. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; There are so many other key but subtle events which helped bring to birth modern Israel, but those above are sufficient to highlight a point right now. They allow us to draw certain parallels between it and the Messianic Movement. Politically, Israel s founding was one of the hottest of its time; religiously, the Messianic Movement is the hottest of today. Yet it lacks one vital thing Israel did not lack: a disciplined group with a goal for all Jews the Haganah. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Yes, Israel s political and paramilitary engine was fractured by factions, but each faction had a similar goal in mind. Today, the Messianic Movement is full of factions, but none seem to have a clear goal that could bring all to one point. Each prefers to bicker with the other or leave it  outside. It would have been tragic if Israeli politics had been like-minded. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; The Messianic Movement should be viewed in like manner as a restoration, a returning<IMG ID="Picture219" HEIGHT=172 WIDTH=198 SRC="../assets/images/exodus-paul-newman.jpg" VSPACE=0 HSPACE=0 ALIGN="RIGHT" BORDER=0 ALT="exodus-paul-newman" TITLE="exodus-paul-newman"> after a long exile within the parameters of Christendom s conformity programs for all believers. Leaders and those who will become leaders have to leave off the mindset of a  Jewish space and begin to take advantage of events as they unfold. Recognition of genuine Nazarenes as Jews for the sake of aliyah is one; recognition by Rabbinic (Traditional) Judaism is another.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; The Messianic Movement has slowly but solidly been coming about, but so far it lacks a Balfour Declaration. . . and it lacks direction. In such a position it lacks the ability to take advantage of future events in its favour. Seemingly unrelated events are sometimes far more crucial than one would expect. Take, for instance, WWI and the British Mandate already noted. Although there has been a primitive Haganah, it has not gone beyond the mindset of defense. This is not decrying them; they has been faithful, and they are creating those spiritual kibutzot and Gan Dafnas, but things are now in the early stages of hotting up. There can be no denying that we are in the midst of another spiritual aliyah, which began a few years ago. It is time to develop a defense that is capable of working with concerted effort to bring about exodus from Churches and secularism. This obviously requires the  Jewish space for them to exodus too, but it also requires organization for all those Jewish spaces to move in one direction. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Exodus can have many meanings, and for Messianism it has had many stages already. I think many know how Messianism has paralleled the founding of Modern Israel. It started in the 19th century with a Hebrew-Christian movement, but there was no real attempt at aliyah (in a spiritual sense). They remained largely Hebrews who believed in Jesus. Jews regarded them as converts and geshmad. It spread from there until it got enormous publicity in the antiestablishment era with  Jews for Jesus. But that was a halfhearted aliyah at best, like the Second Aliyah to the land of Israel. But as that aliyah brought back Hebrew, so did the antiestablishment era give publicity to the whole concept of dedicated Hebrews believing in Jesus and being a distinct and separate voice. Therefore it is hardly to be condemned, as it often is. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Both aliyahs were tentative and Hebrews remained largely Christian in outlook. This last fact inspired many church denominations to give tremendous support to Jewish evangelizing. It was considered sending the gospel to the original Jews, and this was considered laudable, even if the fundamentalist churches largely looked upon it as a very sectored ministry unlikely to grow. The more liberal churches like the Pentecostal and Baptists viewed Israel s restoration as a State as prophetic. They, more than anybody, supported Jewish missions. They also adulated Jews for being Jews, and thus many Jews entered Christianity through these portals, adopting their sectarian doctrines and eschatology.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Thus Messianic Jewry, used in this context quite loosely, had a cocoon. The catch was this cocoon both protected it and <I>injected</I> it. Messianic Jews were being supported, but they were also being conditioned by the doctrines and theological outlook of Pentecostal Christianity. Most, if not all, of these Hebrews were unaware of Pentecostalism s background in Midwest spiritualism and its only recent emergence in Christianity; and, at that time, that it was also largely condemned by other older denominations of Christianity. But unaware of this, Pentecostalism <I>was</I> Christianity to Jews. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Unexpectedly, however, at the same time as the antiestablishment movement caused an influx of Jews into belief in Jesus as the Messiah, a seed of spiritual Zionism had been planted and quietly grew until recently when this present aliyah became overtly obvious as doggedly Jewish. Modern Messianic or Nazarene Judaism was something unexpected indeed. Jews remaining Jews, secular Jews becoming fervent Jews, even baal teshuva! . . .but believing in Jesus. Even the moderates within it disliked being called <I>Christians</I>. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Nothing has rankled two religions more than this, and nothing has created so much contention as this last aliyah. Yet it should have been an expected aliyah, the third one (arguably) since the antiestablishment era of 1967. After this aliyah there will be more, and thus there is more than ever a need for a Haganah. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; The dangers from the churches is only indirect. Fundamental churches already condemn it as heretical, so there is no point in even climbing that wall right now. But the Charismatic (Pentecostal) Christian background is the most surprised. They were MJ s steroma, but Nazarene Jews are beginning to realize that Pentecostalism and its mindset and doctrines was the intrusive element.  Fad religion fans and Jewish Roots have surrounded it MJ and always made it look largely like Charismatic Christianity. Ricochets now rumble within the movement as a result of the spiritual aliyahs. Thus there are volatile reactions, to say the least.&nbsp; Some Messianic Jews condemn the Church as historically corrupt. Pentecostal and Baptist churches, dabbling in  Messianic Congregations, are finding themselves ostracized. Reactions have been extraordinary on both sides because Messianic Judaism is more than just a religion, it is a cultural movement to remain Jewish. . . and it is controlled by Jews and run for Jews. Gentiles are welcome to tag along, but sometimes they get the feeling they are only in the baggage train. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; I don t think any Jew within this movement can be blind to God s hand in forming the time. It is, very much so, the only hope of Israel. And not just of salvation in the redeemer. It is the only movement that can unite a people torn about their identity and purpose. A people steeped in cynicism and secularism, atheism and negativism. The Romans saw themselves in a similar position so long ago. Many believe Constantine legalized Christianity because it seemed the only religion to help unite the disillusioned old Roman religion of the Empire. Christianity was, in this view, in a perfect position when things went south into the Roman lavitora. It is not coincidence that Messianic Judaism is growing and doggedly protecting itself at a time when other political events are unfolding that are moving the world, the Church and Israel into possible upheaval. From upheaval and a  gone mit der vind aftermath, there comes disillusionment and with this seeking for something to explain it all.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Thus solutions to the problems within Messianic Judaism are more urgent than it may seem. It now faces identical problems as those that faced political Israel during the Mandate. Leaders had to know how to balance the objectives of factions and even how to accommodate all the Palestinians the Jewish government would inherit as citizens. Because Messianic Judaism believes in Jesus as the Messiah, it has inherited large number of Gentile adherents. Because it is a Judaism, it has factions in it ranging from liberal to Hasidic. This, as you can imagine, creates a boiling pot. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; One of these factions must gain the foresight to unite, however shakily, the factions and bring about positive goals. The Haganah the guard or defense, as its name means, was instrumental in protecting the Jewish communities while Palestine was still a Mandate, but it knew how to develop and start facilitating immigration. Along with this it was an influential proactive movement when the time was right and when push came to shove. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; So far, that vision has not surfaced in Messianic Judaism, and yet we have aliyahs coming and more immigration, both Jew and non-Jew, that need protecting from thinly veiled Pentecostal, Baptist and Hebrew Roots rollers. Israel s heart is being restored and this will continue; it will not die out. Immigration <I>will </I>continue. Where do we allow our own people to immigrate and how safe do we make the journey? </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Where are we now and what are the problems? A dominant goal of one faction is to  remain Jewish in all its aspects. Another is similar; but it is more extreme, using Judaizing to protect itself from the massive amounts of Gentile evangelicals interested in the movement. Another is similar again, but it proposes  One Torah and insists that Gentiles must become  righteous proselytes. But the contentions these groups cause with each other arise from perceived <IMG ID="Picture220" HEIGHT=144 WIDTH=306 SRC="../assets/images/exodus.jpg" VSPACE=0 HSPACE=0 ALIGN="LEFT" BORDER=0 ALT="exodus" TITLE="exodus">threats more than goals. And that s a part of the  vision problem. The Moderates are most doctrinally correct, by the letter. They wish to insulate Messianic Judaism from  gentilizing and the Gentile members from Judaizing. A first century synagogue is laudable, but 2,000 years and lots of blood has gone under the bridge. They wish to create synagogues where Jews can worship a true  Judaism. This is laudable too, but the attitude behind it is patience and not perseverance. As ranks swell and move, these  Jewish spaces could find themselves discarded oases. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Non Jews must understand and the moderates must be reminded of the Jewish mindset. Jews deeply devoted to both religious value and cultural heritage were in the Irgun. The Irgun was far more radical than the Haganah, and was even regarded by many Jews and non Jews as a terrorist organization. Yet the Irgun saw itself as fighting a righteous cause with the tactics that were necessary given the era. Some Jews who do and shall deeply believe Jesus is the Messiah can be little different. A  spiritual Irgun looks upon near 2,000 years of Christianity as Church corruption. They blame it for blinding their own people to the truth. They have a grudge. There is little difference between them and Zionist Jews who viewed the British or the Arabs in Palestine as their enemies of freedom. They view the Church as having occupied Israel in a symbolic sense. And they are the ones most likely to seek vengeance on the Church for  corrupting the image of the Jewish Messiah. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Moderate Messianics adhering to patience and the creating of  Jewish space are at a terrible disadvantage in combatting a growing Irgun.&nbsp; Only a Haganah, an organization with perseverance toward a united goal can combat and outpace what could be a very damaging influence on Messianic Judaism. As more Jews enter Messianism,&nbsp; the Irgun faction will swell as well. The Irgun type are easily recognizable already by their background. They might have been raised in<IMG ID="Picture221" HEIGHT=307 WIDTH=214 SRC="../assets/images/479px-KD_1946.jpg" VSPACE=0 HSPACE=0 ALIGN="RIGHT" BORDER=0 ALT="479px-KD_1946" TITLE="479px-KD_1946"> churches and now wish to throw off anything associated with  Christianity, even the name. Many are non-Jews, but the Jewish faction will attract more traditional Jews. Former Jews for Jesus converts or those who converted to Christianity during the heyday of antiestablishment have been leaders of the moderate faction. They are often between a rock and a hard place tolerant but leery of the grudge gang and worried over the influx of too many non Jews thinking that a genuine Messianic synagogue is going to be like the Pentecostal and Baptist Hebrew Roots movements. They are the older sages. They are those of the first aliyah, trying to buffer Messianism and Christianity.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Haganah can only form between these groups. The old guard must remain political and protect the movement, but they have to lose some of the old sectarian theology of the Charismatics.&nbsp; Many young Jews are entering and they will continue to do so. Compared to what s coming, genuine Messianic Judaism is only germinating. But a little water and it will sprout. Without a clear and decisive Haganah, the young can easily be recruited into an Irgun seeking to ravage Christianity as one way to prevent it from stifling Messianic Judaism. Both the moderates and the fanatics share one common truth: they know God is behind this movement. Both also tend to get really upset when Christianity tries to attack it, but the  Irgun sees Christianity or the Church corporate as a danger. That usually spells reprisal. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Verbally, there have been reprisals already. We know well of them. Irgun mentality, for all its usefulness in keeping out  Hebrew Roots and phony rabbis, cannot in the long run expand Messianic Judaism. Only a moderate faction with an edge can lead and achieve goals religiously and politically. The future threats against Messianic Judaism are not from without. They are from within.
