No Idolatry</P> <P>2. No Murder</P> <P>3. No Theft</P> <P>4. No sexual promiscuity.</P> <P>5. No blasphemy </P> <P>6. Not to eat food that is strangled or drink the blood. </P> <P>7. Justice (and a body to perform justice and judgment) </P> <P>&nbsp;</P> </LAYER></DIV><DIV ID="Text190LYR" CLASS="TextObject"><LAYER ID="Text190LYR" VISIBILITY=INHERIT TOP=475 LEFT=48 WIDTH=557 HEIGHT=3724 Z-INDEX=4> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; The reader can see, especially with No. 7, that the 7 laws actually entail thousands or more rules and regulations. Justice, as we know, means equity to equate in punishment like for like or its equivalent. This encompasses all civil and criminal law.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; We regard these 7 laws as the basic standard of Abraham s day. God, in fact, openly required that Abram  walk before me and be thou perfect and God would covenant with him. The very statement above implies Abram knew what was proper behavior. It was when God covenanted with Abraham that he asked for a token. Circumcision applied to all males in Abraham s household. This one extra rule, a token ritual, applied thereafter to Abraham s male descendants. It remains, however, but a sign. The divine declaration to  walk before me and be thou perfect was and is still required. It is the basis of civilization. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; But is it the basis of righteousness? </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Abraham was righteous before God. Now we get into man s relationship with God and we leave off man s relationship with his fellow man. This is the importance of the life of Abraham. His righteousness with God was not found in keeping Torah or the Noahide laws. You re all no doubt certain that  faith is now going to be preached. Not entirely. Faithful Abraham, for all his name s equation with faith, did in fact doubt God. However, God overlooked the lapse in faith. Why? <I>Because God</I> had already declared Abraham righteous, and God, who is honorable, keeps to his word. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Let s look at this now. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; In Genesis 12, God told Abram to depart from Haran and his kindred. He journeyed into Canaan and there at Sichem God appeared to him and told him this was the land he would give to his seed. It did not require much faith to believe this. Abraham was still of an age where he could naturally sire children. But when there was a famine in the land, Abram went into Egypt, and there he had a tremendous lapse of faith. Because our mother Sarah was so beautiful, Abram told her to claim to be his sister, else the Egyptians would kill him to posses her. What? Had God not promised Abram his seed would posses the land of Canaan, at least around Sichem? Abram had no child yet. There was no way he could be killed, else God s promise meant nothing. Abram indeed had a lack of faith. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Yet Abram continued to walk justly. Not only justly, but he avoided contention. When there was strife between his herdsmen and those of his nephew, Lot, he said let them divide. And although he was rich and the elder, he let Lot choose first. No strife could come of this. If Lot chose the best, how could he complain? If he chose land that was inferior to Abram s, he had only himself to blame. Abram was wise and sought peace. He was not greedy. He was humble and peace loving. This showed faith God would provide.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; God then appeared to Abram again. Now he showed him just how far and wide the gift to him and his seed would be. His seed would also be as the dust of the ground for number. God told Abram to walk up and down the land and see the possession. God was clearly impressed with Abram s own personal ethics toward Lot, his humility, and his faith. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; This is evident yet again. When Lot was taken by Chedorloamer and his confederates, and Abram was told of it, Abram armed his men, 318, and smote the enemy, pursuing them as far as Hobah  on the left of Damascus. And he brought back Lot and all the goods and chattel that Chedorloamer had taken from the king of Sodom and his confederates. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Aside from getting his kinsman, it was not Abram s battle. What Abram did was justice. He retrieved his kinsman and smote those who unjustly waged war against other kings. He brought back the goods to those whom they belonged. When the king of Sodom told him to take the goods as his reward and he would take the people, Abram declined. Abram s faith in God was great, but so was his sense of honor. He would not have it said that the king of Sodom made him rich. More than this, Abram was truly conscious of the honor of God and he knew the Canaanites knew he was blessed of God. On his way to the king of Sodom, Melchizedek, King of Salem, had met Abram, addressed him as blessed of the most high God, and blessed him in the name of the most high God. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Abram was just. He was honorable. No law required such honor and sense of personal ethic. Nor did it require such faith. Abram was proud without arrogance. He was more proud of God s identity with him than for things. God was well-pleased indeed. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; After Abram refused reward for himself, God appeared to him again.  <SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. What an intimate thing to say! Since Abram already knew the land was promised to him, he asked now what gift God was going to give him, seeing he still had no child. His faith was wavering a little, but he was perhaps a little more impatient. The land would always be; but he was getting old. By this he directed God to reiterate what was truly bothering him: he still had no child and that had been promised, too. God made certain to Abram that his heir would not be a servant s child. To bolster his faith he showed him the stars of heaven and told him that his heir would be from his own bowels, and to count the stars for the multitude of his descendants. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; God had already told Abram they would be as the dust of the earth for multitude, but Abram s faith needed a lift. Abram did indeed believe God. God was well pleased again with Abram, and he declared his faith righteousness. Now Abram asked a sign for how he will know he would inherit the land. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; God made it plain it would be some time. He had him divide a heifer, a ram and a she goat, each of three years old, and a turtledove and a young pigeon. Abram waited. He waited. He drove away the birds from the slain animals for the length of time he waited. Finally it was sunset, and Abram fell into a deep sleep. In a vision Abram was told that it would not be until after 400 years and after his seed came up from another land with great possessions. Then in the darkness of night, God passed a fire between the divided carcasses. God had made the promises. Now he covenanted.  Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates. The deal was done. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; But Abram lost faith again. Sarah was barren. He should have assumed God spoke of his seed through his wife. But instead he listened to Sarah and went into Hagar the handmaid. She conceived and gave birth to Ishmael. There s no need to go into the problems between Sarah and Hagar. Abram s next major contact with God was when he was 99 years old. God told Abram to  walk before me and be thou perfect. God had made promises. Now it was time to covenant. God reiterated once again all his promises and that he would keep them. He asked the sign of Circumcision. This was to be kept.</SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; Thus God had repeatedly promised the land to Abram and his seed. He finally covenanted and passed fire through the slain animals. God had promised seed to Abram, and he thus covenanted by Circumcision. Even Ishmael was circumcised. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; Circumcision, however, did not guarantee the promise. Ishmael was not to be the child of promise. Now there was another ghastly slip of faith. When God told him that Ishmael would not be his heir but that Sarah would conceive, Abraham  fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! </SPAN></P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Faithful Abraham? Yes, but he wavered many times. But God always remained faithful. He visited Abraham the next year as he said he would, appearing as a man with 2 men with him. Even then Sarah laughed at the promise of a son. But God said  Is anything to hard for the L<SPAN STYLE="font-size: x-small;">ORD</SPAN>? </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; In this encounter we see that quality that God loved in Abraham. He was generous and humble. His faith may have wavered on occasion and he didn t always understand, but he was a just man who believed God was righteous. When the L<SPAN STYLE="font-size: x-small;">ORD</SPAN> went toward Sodom and Abraham saw him and the men on their way, we see it clearly.  <SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">And the L<SPAN STYLE="font-size: 10pt;">ORD</SPAN> said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the L<SPAN STYLE="font-size: 10pt;">ORD</SPAN>, to do justice and judgment; that the L<SPAN STYLE="font-size: 10pt;">ORD</SPAN> may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp;  Do justice and judgment. No. 7 of what we call the Noahide laws. It is vast and encompassing, and God didn t have to tell Abraham what it was. What a standard indeed when one s soul had to be after God s own. We see this in how Abraham asked God if he will spare Sodom.&nbsp;  <SPAN STYLE="font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times, Serif, serif;">And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? <SPAN STYLE="font-style: normal;">Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? </SPAN></SPAN></SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times, Serif, serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: normal;">&nbsp;&nbsp; It was not so great a test of faith as some have promoted when Abraham was told to sacrifice Isaac. By this time, Abraham s faith was well established. He knew God does not require sacrifice. God had promised through Isaac Abraham s seed would be as the stars of heaven. Despite the rabbinic belief the event was very trying for Abraham, it seems he rather knew God would intervene. So great was his faith by this time. It is not the action of drawing the knife on Isaac that showed God Abraham feared and loved him, but Abraham s knowledge that God would naturally intervene. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; Abraham believed God was righteous. In this he never wavered. Yes, sometimes he wavered in understanding promises given to him. But he never wavered in his belief that God was righteous. And Abraham knew what righteousness was. What kind of heart must be in a person to understand justice? Justice is how we live amongst others. What kind of heart must be in a person to understand judgment? Judgment is how we judge rightly in matters between others, and make laws. This heart was in Abraham, and this heart comes from God. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; Abraham had a deep relationship with God. A natural one wherein he behaved rightly without having to be told what was right. This is indeed spiritual. No law can make a person like this. Only those who truly seek God can find this. Simple faith is merely reactive. But Abraham s faith was proactive. He must have indeed been an impressive man. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; Just Noahide laws? They are harder than the Torah. Rituals can be done without any heart. Rituals can be done while a person is striving to have a right heart about them. But that s not what God was talking about to Moses when he said  above all keep to thy souls. He was speaking about his covenant with Abraham and all the blessings he would bring. To have a right heart doesn t mean engaging in a ritual with a good feeling. It means walking with God. It means attaining a level of communion with him beyond mere dos and don ts. His nature becomes your nature. This nature is above compulsion because of laws and fear of punishment. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; How many today are impressed by the teachings of Baal Shem Tov?&nbsp; Look at all that came from his teachings. Yet he merely walked as Abraham had walked. Besht had the Torah, and he did not discourage study, but he reminded people that some rabbis study laws so much they forget about God. You see, he sought God to understand him. He did not seek a heartless behavioral pattern. He sought the heart of the one who ordained laws to prevent injustice. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;  <SPAN STYLE="font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times, Serif, serif; font-style: normal;">Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? The standard is found in so many parables, in so many laws. A base minimum that tells us if we know how to do rightly, how much more does God know how to judge rightly? It s in the law that tells us to love those that hate us. It s in the story of David and the shewbread. It s in the parable of the Good Samaritan or the fallen sparrow. </SPAN></SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; Just what is God s actual standard? It is  walk before me and be thou perfect. In other words, walk as though I m watching, and walk as I am the standard.  Do justice and judgment. It is the standard of God himself. To attain that level and motive of behavior, to be able to lay down laws, reflects a level of dwelling with God which can never be judged by the Torah. To believe God is righteous reflects a love for God beyond mere mental recognition. Abraham walked with God, in a way wherein God required more than the Torah. Abraham walked with God with profound depth, wherein his natural behavior was after God s own heart. God declared him righteous because his faith was the outcropping of his deep and profound sense of love for and faith in that God was righteous. Although he may have wavered on promises and understanding, he never questioned the honor of God. And God never withdrew his promises or his word. He declared Abraham righteous because he believed in the quality of God, without knowledge of individual laws. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; It is written in Moses that if we find something that does not belong to us we should return it to the owner when we discover who that is. Abraham already knew that. He brought back goods to those who owned them and took no bounty of it. He didn t have to be told to do this. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp; No 7.  Justice. Just Noahide laws indeed. That one law requires a right heart before God. This is harder than the entire Torah. It interprets it. It explains it. It was required before it.
