The judgments in Sanhedrin cover several topics of Jewish law and bring to life the judicial system, mental habits, and even daily life of the Second Temple Period.&nbsp; </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; In some respects Sanhedrin reads like minutes of a meeting-- and this is appropriate. It is very much a distillation of cases. The Sanhedrin consisted of 71 members and held constituted power since Moses day, when he was the 71st member. In the time of the kings, it was obvious there was a limit to any power the Sanhedrin could bring on them. With the histories of the Kings of Israel and Judah we get our first taste of the foreshadowing of the <A HREF="../html/what_is_the_kingdom_of_god_.html">Kingdom of God</A>. The Sanhedrin was well aware that the king could never be judged and cannot be witnessed against. He was completely in the hands of God. Thus when the king erred all the great council could do was warn the king of the repercussions of the judgment of God. The L<SPAN STYLE="font-size: x-small;">ORD</SPAN> used this as a powerful illustration of being in the Kingdom of God. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; This, and so many other events of daily Jewish life, politics, culture and controversy, God used to illustrate his deeper revelations. God communicates with us according to our level of understanding. He uses analogies and parables we can comprehend to imprint the finger of his meaning in our brains. Parables of the ancient sages, scribes and lawyers, implicitly reflect God s subtle influence on popular thought. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; One example is particularly potent. One ruling explains why one who is hung upon a tree (stake or cross) must be brought down by sunset: </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);"><SPAN STYLE="font-size: 12pt;">There is a Boraitha: R. Mair used to say: There is a parable. To what can this be compared? To two twin brothers, one of whom was selected for a king and the other became a robber, and was hanged at the command of the king. Now, people who saw him hanged would say that the king was hanged, and therefore the king commanded the corpse to be taken off (<I>i.e.</I>, as man was created in the image of God). (Soncino) 7. R. Meir said: What means the Scripture: FOR THAT WHICH IS HANGED IS A CURSE OF GOD? It is as though there were two brothers, twins, who were like one another in appearance; one became king of the world, while the other went off and consorted with thieves. After a time the latter was captured and crucified on a cross, and all who came and went said,  It is like as though the king were crucified. Therefore it is said: FOR THAT WHICH IS HANGED IS A CURSE [image] OF GOD. </SPAN></SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; To the uninitiated in Jewish life, the Talmud is some extra book of the Bible. Far from it. Sanhedrin (among other tractates) makes it clear that any tradition of the scribes can be transgressed. . . .if a <I>scriptural</I> reason can be found. Talmud tractates must cite scripture as the ultimate authority. Evangelicals may insist that they are <I>sola scriptura</I>. In truth, they have simply never written down all their extrapolations from scripture. Jewish sages did, making sure, unlike the Christians, that everything was <I>sura scriptura.</I> The same stands true today and forever: ultimately the scriptures. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; A few years ago <A HREF="../html/modern_sanhedrin_ruling_--_the.html">the modern Sanhedrin </A>revealed again the existence of the Kingdom of God over and independent of the Torah. As the ancient Sanhedrin could only warn the kings of Israel of God s direct judgment for their actions, so did they warn the government of Israel. When plans were being drawn about  uprooting Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip, the Sanhedrin held long deliberations and finally declared that the government would answer to God in the future for this sin.</SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; The Sanhedrin s ruling condensed the span of the last 2500 years as though it was yesterday. The reader will notice in our weekly study the similarity between the language of tractate Sanhedrin and modern judgments. With this, one realizes that Jewish law hasn t changed. It has, in fact, evolved but not changed. It has evolved because different conditions have arisen. It has remained the same because the principles haven t changed. The world stands in awe how ancient Egypt maintained the same culture and script for 3,000 years because outward culture is a very visible thing. But Jewish Law has lasted longer. It is more sublime than great buildings and public dress. It has lasted so long because all rulings have to be underpinned by Scripture. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN STYLE="color: rgb(255,255,255);">&nbsp;&nbsp; Let us therefore delve into something far more than a dry law book. Let us go back over 2,000 years and open the pages of life, discourse, judgment and wisdom of a world slowly returning. &nbsp; </SPAN> </P> </LAYER></DIV><DIV ID="Picture144LYR"><LAYER
