The aristocracy kept quiet, shifting their weight from foot to foot, self conscious, while he went on. The king looked around blankly. He never understood what the point of the conversation was. Nancy Mitford writes in <I>The Sun King</I> how Louis XIV could never be impressed with such talk. He didn t think there was a difference between the nobles and peasantry.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; The great French king is considered the epitome of royal absolutism. He was in his eyes God s regent of France and chief representative. Louis XIV remains the example to all royals of pure substance, a man with nothing to prove. He showed no favour because of birth, for it all meant nothing to him.</P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; In truth, there was a man who was indeed favoured of God in this world. And Abraham was very clearly aware of this and what was required of him. More than a French king (or any king), Abraham knew understood the dignity of God. He knew he had to reflect this in the world. Abraham was a man of faith, but he was also a man of honour. He understood the greatness of God and he acted accordingly. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Much is made of Abraham believing that God would give him descendants and then much doctrine and exegesis has spun off this. But this was merely one moment in a building chain of events. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Earlier in Genesis chapter 13 God had already promised Abraham the land and that his descendants would be as the dust of the earth for their number. But something was soon to happen that truly showed Abraham s sense of honour. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Battles began between the local kings or emirs. Lot, Abraham s nephew, was taken by Chedorlaomer. Abraham took his own servants and went and did battle, smiting the emir Chedorlaomer and taking all his loot. He saved his nephew and restored him to his home at Sodom. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; The purpose here is not to recount a story but to highlight its place in Abraham s life and show what a reflection it was of his character. At this point the king of Sodom came out and told Abraham to take his portion of the loot. But he would not, lest it was said that the king of Sodom made him rich. Abraham was not only aware God would provide for him; he was aware of God s name upon him. Abraham would taken nothing of the king. What he did he did because of honour to save his kinsman. He needed nor wanted any pay. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; God was well pleased. It was then that God visited Abraham in a vision and told him plainly that he was Abraham s reward. He was the font of all blessings to Abraham. It was then that Abraham asked what God would give him, seeing that he had no children. There is more involved here than children of Abraham s body. It was a point of honour. Abraham would take nothing of the king of Sodom because of honour. He knew God was more honourable. Abraham knew the name of God was upon him and that all in the land knew he had been favoured of the  most high God. He knew God could not leave him with Eliezer of Damascus as his heir. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; God reiterated his point. He took Abraham and showed him the stars of heaven. His descendants would be as the stars in number. That was enough for Abraham. He believed. God had spoken, honouring his word and making it plain that this blessing was a part of God s lifelong commitment to Abraham.&nbsp; But it was not belief in that God would merely perform an act. It was faith in that God was righteous. More than children were promised. A blessing upon Abraham s name and heritage was promised. It was not just descendants. God was making a commitment to maintain the heritage of Abraham until the end. Abraham s faith was in more than God promising an act. God was honourable and righteous. He had a good purpose to this promise. He had bound himself to Abraham s heritage. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Is this your faith? Do you walk like a sheik, mindful of God s name upon you? Do you walk as a king, accepting no man s person but mindful of how your conduct will reflect upon God s name and promises? This is Abraham s faith. He believed God was honorable. Abraham did not simply believe God could do a particular act. He lived his faith and was mindful of God s name at all times in his conduct. Abraham knew justice, that is, he could live justly with all men; and he could do judgment, that is, he could judge rightly between others and not pervert justice. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; Is this how you live? Is this your faith? Are you mindful of the things that God loves-- justice, mercy, honour? </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp;  The fool hath said in his heart there is no God, said the Psalmist. To believe that God exists is not Abraham s faith. It makes you just one step above fool. But Abraham knew God s character. He was mindful the judge of all the world would do rightly. </P> <P>&nbsp;&nbsp; The faith of Abraham was not the belief that God existed. It was the firm belief in God s righteousness and honour. And this Abraham lived daily, and this guided his conduct.
